PRESS RELEASE

University of Sussex Public Statement on the Benue Book and Arts Festival

We are proud to support the first Benue Books Festival and work together with SEVHAGE towards the attainment of sustainable literacy which falls under SDG 4 quality education, which the University of Sussex is noted for around the world. With our scholarships and extensive outreach work in Nigeria, we help inspire the literary talents of the future to achieve this potential. Every year, we run essay writing competitions, including our flagship ‘WritingGamesNG’ which has showcased talented Nigerian writers like Oladele Oluwasogo and Emmanuella Chisom James, who won the 2016 and 2017 editions of the competitions respectively.

The University of Sussex ranks in the top 200 of world universities and is the foremost university in the world for Development Studies. English Literature and English Language and Linguistics are ranked 9th, and Drama 7th, in the UK for research quality and our courses aim to equip students with critical thinking and creativity to stand out as leaders in the future workplace.

We inspire inquisitiveness, respect for everyone, and encourage humility no matter how the heights one attains. President Thabo Mbeki summed this up aptly as follows “Sussex said inquire all the time, get to know more, learn more. Don’t be afraid to say I was wrong, and I think that’s an enormous asset.”

Sussex graduates go on to make an impact an impact in their fields, countries and around the world. It is not a surprise then that some of our notable alum include Bogolo Kenewendo, Simon Kolawole, Becky Anderson, Gbemisola Saraki, Thabo Mbeki and many more. A notable alumnus of the University of Sussex is the amiable Professor David Ker, foremost modernist literary critic and administrative genius who was former Vice Chancellor of the Benue State University, Makurdi and Veritas University, respectively.

We look forward to future collaborations with SEVHAGE as well as other well-meaning organisations around Africa in promoting education and literacy while promoting research that marks us as a leading destination of learning in the world.
